What is Cupping?

​

Cupping is an alternative medicine practise undertaken by a trained therapist placing special cups on the skin to create a suction effect.  The therapy can be used as a form of deep tissue massage to help reduce pain, inflammation, remove toxins, improve general well-being and increase blood flow to certain areas of the body.

How Does Cupping Work?

​

The suction creates a negative pressure in the cup, which causes the soft tissue within the border of the cup to get sucked up into the cup.  To balance equilibrium, blood will also rush in to the area underneath the cup, which will have a lower concentration of blood than the surrounding area.

Now there are some common side effects to cupping but nothing to be concerned about and are short lived:

Feeling a deep sense of relaxation and relief

Falling asleep

A slight twinge feeling when the skin is suctioned into the cup, which can be pleasurable, uncomfortable or slightly painful

Bruising

Slight swelling

Slight soreness at the sites where the cups were placed

Tiredness or lethargy once the session is over

​Site Specific Conditions

​

I will still offer cupping therapy to these clients but certain areas of the body should avoid contact with the cups:

​

Fractured or broken bones

Dislocations

Slipped Discs

Herpes

Shingles

Hives

Eczema

Psoriasis

Acute Rosacea

Hernias or sites of former Hernias

Due to the number of contraindications conditions that I exclude treatment with cupping are as follows:

Kidney Failure

Cardiac Failure

Leukaemia

Allergic Purpura

Any other type of Organ Failure

Cancer that is spreading through the body

Haemophilia

Allergic Dermatitis

Dermatosis

Morbid Obesity

High Fever

Someone Very Underweight

Radiation

At present I am offering one day per week static cupping involving the application of oil and cups to the body.

​

Over the next few weeks I hope to add different types of cupping as well as increase days within Energise.
